About the opportunity:
Due to an internal promotion, this is an exciting career opportunity within Holcim as part of the MV Buffalo team. The MV Buffalo is responsible for the effective transportation of cement for Holcim throughout New Zealand from its homeport of Timaru. Within Holcim New Zealand, cement is imported from Japan, stored in one of two storage domes and then distributed via road transport (upper North Island) or via the MV Buffalo vessel/ship (lower North Island and South Island) through the ports of New Plymouth, Wellington, Napier, Nelson, Lyttleton and Dunedin. As the Third Officer you will assist the Master and Chief Officer to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the ship, and ensure that the ship complies with all statutory and local regulations in delivering these operational outcomes.

You will be responsible for

  • Along with the 2nd Officer, assisting the Chief Officer in cargo loading and discharging operations while in port
  • Carrying out ballasting and de-ballasting operations as directed by the Chief Officer
  • Supervising and directing crew in mooring and unmooring the ship
  • Correction and maintenance of nautical publications if required
  • Stepping up to the Chief Mates role to cover the Chief Mates periods of leave
  • Acts as a night watchman if required when ship alongside Timaru
  • Checking and maintaining Firefighting and LSA equipment
  • Ensuring the Master and Chief Engineer are kept informed of incidents or issues, which may affect the efficient and safe operation of the ship
  • Training crew on board as necessary, in particular drills and health and safety objectives when required
  • Assisting the Chief Engineer and Chief Officer in directing and monitoring the work of outside contractors on board
To be successful in this role you will need:
  • Previous sea going experience.
  • Foreign-going Mate certificate (NZ recognition) desirable however as a minimum a 2nd Mate foreign-going certificate (NZ recognition)
  • GMDSS endorsement
  • An ability to effectively lead and delegate tasks for high standards of operational performance
  • An ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Highly effective communication skills with a high level of computer literacy
